Eindhoven

Eindhoven is the fifth largest city in the Netherlands. It is situated in the South of the Netherlands in the province of North Brabant. It is also known as the City of Light (“Licht Stad” in Dutch). This nickname comes from the fact that Philips opened his first factory producing lightbulbs here. Eindhoven was growing together with the factory and has developed into a vibrant industrial success story.

The city is part of a so-called Brainport region which is together with the Schiphol Airport and the Rotterdam Harbour one of the three economic pillars of the country. The overall growth of the economy in this area in past few years has been one and half times higher than nationally. Moreover, it was declared to be the smartest region in the world!

As a design, innovation and technology hub, Eindhoven is full of energy and attracts “cool” creative people from all over the world. It has more than 225 000 inhabitants and over the time it has become very international. Currently more than 1 in 10 “Eindhovenaren” (as they call themselves) has a different nationality than the Dutch.
Eindhoven is a very convenient city to live in. Thanks to the Eindhoven Airport it is easily accessible from almost any part of Europe and thus connected with the rest of the world. Furthermore within 140 kilometers you can reach several other big cities in the Netherlands, Germany or Belgium. Within the city itself, everything is easily reachable by public transport or by bike. But that doesn’t mean that the city does not have enough to offer! Everybody can find things to do.

Technical University of Eindhoven, Design Academy and Fontys School of Applied Sciences are renowned institutions in the whole country (and worldwide) and they attract students with feeling for new technologies, design and innovations.

High Tech Campus which is covering an area of 100 hectares is a center of technology and innovation. It is a home of more than a hundred companies that are working together on the development of new technologies.

The creative heart of Eindhoven is in Strijp S, in the former Philips factories. It is a home to more than a hundred creative entrepreneurs, but also to many interesting events and happenings.

Cultural lovers can enjoy a rich program of cultural institutions located in the city center – museum of contemporary art Van Abbe Museum, theater Parktheater, music centra Muziekcentrum Frits Philips and De Effenaar, or they can choose from a long list of other events organized throughout the whole year (Dutch Design Week, Festival of Light “Glow”, Feelgood Market, Marathon Eindhoven, etc.).

Eindhoven social is also very diverse. Whether you want to have a lunch with friends, a romantic dinner, or an epic night out, you can be sure that you will find your spot here. Discover the night life on “Stratumseind”, the longest pub street in the Netherlands.

Thanks to a number of high tech and multinational employers Eindhoven has a large community of expats. You can find here a vibrant network of various expat organizations and groups that help expats to socialize and integrate in the city. Enjoy a range of activities, relax and meet new people.
